I go to a church in Waco Texas called Antioch Community Church, I have been going there for about 6 months and I've made some great friends. I don't feel its a cult but my parents overwhelming do. Please help me and invest some time to help me figure this out. I get a lot of good worship in at their services and a lot of support from my life group.
Update:They don't try and keep me from others, in fact they want there to be a resolution between me and my parents. They encourage outsiders to come in and when people turn away they are still cordial but respect them if they don't come back

Just a brief look at the website and it seems o.k. but it is hard to tell. One thing I personally don't like is that they teach topically and not verse by verse (Expository preaching) but that does not mean they are heretics or a cult. I just prefer verse by verse teaching.
There are a lot of what are called seeker sensitive churches out there that do not teach the Bible but rather put on an event with hip and cool music, and more of a pep speech and not a sermon. Again, not that relevant music is bad but it has to be centered on God and not on us. If the pastor just tells stories and throws in a Bible verse or two as a side note, run don't walk to another church.
Read your Bible, make sure the teaching lines up with it, and like others have said if the church is trying to keep you from your family that should raise some red flags.
I can tell you this though, if you are a new Christian and your family is not or is another faith or Catholic, they will have a problem with you going to an Evangelical church (being a Born Again believer)
Antioch Community Church Cult
From my research, it is a true Christian Church. The Pastor does not live a lavish lifestyle and I ve read the Pastor and staff are paid the same salary as the average church member; unlike some mega Churches that practice Prosperity Theology, which sells books and draws crowds. Prosperity Theology (Joel Osteen and some other millionaire pastors) is not inline with the message of the New Testament. Prosperity Theology is a false gospel, and one that must be repudiated. Unfortunately, there are some attending this church and also attend another church that practices the Joel Osteen s prosperity theology. Some minister s in training are following Osteen s theology. But this does not appear to be the case for this church.
You did mean "heed", right? I'm a former Baptist, now Catholic, so I have no vested interest in defending the denomination. But I can tell you from my own experience that you're off base on this one. The Baptists churches are far from "personality cults"; for those, you may look to the much-hyped no-particular-denomination "mega-churches", the most prominent of which are built around the personalities of their pastors. But the Baptists? No. Individual congregations may develop a fondness for their pastors, but that's a far cry from cult behavior. Been to a Baptist church lately? Those folks are all carrying Bibles for a reason; the word of God is their authority, not the word of Pastor Goodguy.

Waco Tx Cult
If your church is trying to isolate you from everyone who is not a member of that church, you should get out of it.
If you find spiritual growth in your church and it teaches you to love others, you shouldn't consider it a cult.
if you have to buy the books , tapes and dvd, plus giving a tithe
the pastor or his wife or any other member of the family own the building
a pecking order in the congregation , such as the inner ring, the outer circle [ majority of the congregation ]
you do not speak directly to the pastor , you have to go through an intermediary with any questions
there are no financial documents available if you wish to peruse them
no receipts given out
holding up your money to be blessed , to earn prosperity
trying to disengage you from your natural family
2 or 3 of the above , means a cult
finally if you get a gut feeling , something is not right
The term is applied to groups that follow a living leader who promotes new and unorthodox doctrines and practices. The term cult itself is vague, but it usually denotes a new religious creed built around a charismatic leader, who often proclaims himself to be the personification of God.
The members' devotion to a self-proclaimed human leader is likely to be unconditional and exclusive. Often these leaders boast of having been divinely chosen or even of being themselves divine in nature.
As others have said make sure that they follow the bible and when you have questions that they answer it correctly from the bible and not put men over God's word.

Some of my family members are baptists. (I don't go to church myself.) In general, they seem to base their beliefs on the New Testament. They don't seem the least bit cult-like to me.
