better to find a program that allows you learn without signing any long term contracts, beyond simple employment.
i think swift trucking has a program of that nature.
and if you are under 24, check out the job corps program.
the salt lake city / clearfield campus, and maybe others, have a diesel mechanics program and does have a truck they use with the diesel students to let them learn to drive it and get their CDL's (which a diesel mechanic should have if he wants to able to test drive, and get paid more).
i was there years back. 89 international cab over with a cummins 855 big cam and a roadranger nine speed, normally pulling a single 27' box, but we also had a 48' flat bed that was rarely used.
the tractor was purple, and we called it "dino".
my last few days they repainted the 27' box trailer a BRIGHT white. many jokes where made about a long white shaft with a purple head.....
it wont cost you anything with that program. you will actually get paid while there. and if it takes you over a year, thats because you will learn about a lot more then just driving, and will be prepared for a stay at home and make even more job.
took me 14 months to pass 5 different courses in teh diesel program, plus teh CDL, and i also had a full dozen ASEs when i left campus.
in the height of this recession, and was employed the very next week at my choice of companies......
you really do not want to lease a truck from a company you want to work with since its all in that companies favor not yours work with the company just driving and don't lease
