Once your bags are checked into at the check in counter, they travel along a long conveyor belt being the check desk. The Team behind are called baggage handlers,
They pull the bags off the conveyor belt; load them into what look like large bin boxes for each of the relevant aircraft flight.
The bins are connected to min truck which then drives out to the aircraft and the bags are transferred from the bins to the aircraft cargo hold. (That’s the area under the passenger seating area).
Unfortunately sometime you end up at your destination and your bags don’t arrive on the plane with you it, could be for a number of reasons: For example
Every now and then the wrong bags end up on the wrong flight, your bag is left behind as the baggage on board exceeds the required weight, labels get lost, and other times are basic errors and confusion
.
So a handy tip is to have a change of clothing in your hand luggage just in case your luggage don't arrive with you.
In normal circumstances bags left behind either follows you on a flight behind your one or it went ahead on a previous flight while you’re waiting to take off. Some bags are not recovered and end up in a stock pile of unclaimed baggage which the airline eventually sell off in auction lots. They have a procedure for this and it takes a while for them to do that .
Sounds like it’s your first trip - travel with a change of clothing basic, not bulky or weighty and enjoy your flight and enjoy your trip , make it memorable

The bags go underneath the passenger compartment.
Here is a picture of a cross-section of an airplane, showing the people, and their checked luggage: http://www.embraercommercialjets.com/english/conte...
it travels in space
they are place at the plane 'belly', no a comfortable place to hide yourself... just in case. why?
