I'm having trouble teaching my 2 year old boy how to tell me when he has to potty. He goes all night without peeing and asks to sit on the potty a lot. A little help?
He's probably too young. Let this happen naturally. You are doing the right thing by getting him to sit on the potty. Also, when he poops in his diaper, take him with you to the toilet and dump the poop in. Get him (if he will) to flush the toilet so that he sees where it is supposed to go. It will happen. You are going in the right direction. Make sure you NEVER scold for anything having to do with potty training. You'll be doing the "Poopy in the Potty" dance before you know it.
I've found that if you let him know about once an hour that it's time to go sit on the potty that it helps. Mind you that doesn't mean he has it under his control...just that he's trying and it keeps his bladder empty more often so there are fewer accidents. As for poop in the potty it's much harder. Most little boys learn to poop standing/squatting instead of sitting down. Also just becuase they know they've pooped their diaper doesn't meant they understand the pressure before they poop means to hold it and run to the potty. It's a difficult thing for them to learn.
Praise him whenever he tries to do anything on the potty and let him do it in his own time.
Don't be surprised if he goes through a "potty strike" stage here soon. My son was peeing in the potty pretty reliably from about 18 months on and then suddenly wouldn't even go near the potty. Another 6 months later he wanted to sit on the potty again. Just let it go and offer him the opportunity to sit on the potty.
My boy just turned three and is finally trained (just). He still wears a diaper to bed at night but it is usually dry in the morning. I couldn't get him to tell me either when he had to go. I had to watch him very closely and like all little kids, he would grab at himself when he felt the need to go. I found that if I asked him if he had to go he'd say "yep" and we would go to the potty. It took only a very few successes and the congratulations that followed before he would just go and sit on the pot when he had to go. I could then follow and assist. However this is the third time i tried to train him (starting when he was just two) and he showed no interest at all until this third time we brought the potty out again. So it is fantastic that your little guy IS showing an interest at so young an age ( i have read that three is the average for boys). You are ahead of the game!!
