Hi, i go to muay thai and i am not sure if i should also go to wing chun and why i should go please someone tell me. Thanks, also i will be going to muay boran next year.
1. Wing Chun is not just for the strong and big, but it's also for the weak and small, young and old, Wing Chun is not limited to age, etc.... In contrast, some martial art which relies on raw muscle external power, they can't do as well if they are 80 years old, An old man would likely break his back if he performed a flying high kick.
2. While Boxing and Muay Thai can be considered "External" martial arts and Tai Chi can be considered "Internal" martial art. Wing Chun is right between Internal and External. Therefore, you experience what both hard and soft power means, if you understand it. Wing Chun uses soft power to overcome hard power.
3. Wing Chun uses sensitivity with a drill called Chi Sao ("Sticky Hands"). As long as you remain in physical contact, you can feel and react much quicker. With your eyes, you react about 0.2 seconds, but with touch, you can react .05 seconds. That is 4 times faster in average. At high level of training, you can fight "blindfolded", although that's just a bonus, I do not recommend you to fight blindfolded in real fights. If you don't have contact, you'll be forced to use your eyes. In general, Wing Chun uses both touch and sight.
4. Using the 6 gates: That means Wing Chun faces their entire body at their opponents, like what a wrestler or Judo might do. Tkd for example, would face 3 out of the 6 gates since their stance is sideways. In Wing Chun, they believe that facing their whole body allows them to use both their arms and legs. If you're standing sideways, that limits them to only use one side of the body. That's the logic. I am not saying that 6 gates is better than 3 gates, but its their philosophy that it gives them an advantage.
5. Simplicity: Wing Chun only has 3 empty forms + 2 weapon forms. According to legend, Ng Mui, the creator of Wing Chun, took all the "Useful" moves from the Shaolin Temple that females can use, and put it together. Then she simplified this combat system greatly. Wing Chun is very straight forward both literally and metaphorically.
6. Males and Females can learn Wing Chun: There should be no reason for females to say "Ew, martial art is a 'guy' thing", because Wing Chun is probably the first martial art to be creator by a woman. And with people like Bruce lee and Ip Man, males can learn it just as well. Martial arts is for both gender, but Wing Chun has "proof" that females can learn it with no shame.
7. Center Line: Long story short, your center line will take the full impact of an attack, that's why Wing Chun guard their Center Line and attack their opponent's center line.
8. Low kicks: Wing Chun defends anything above their waist with their hands, and use their legs to defend anything below their waist.
9. Does not rely on muscle: Wing Chun relies its power from its body structure, stance, alignment of limbs, and the forward intention. That's what makes a Wing Chun punch feel "Heavy".
10. Attack and Defend on the same beat: Wing Chun attacks and defends simultaneously in contrasts to other martial arts that "first attack then defend" on a separate beat. This way, Wing Chun kills two birds with one stone. They can use one move to act as a defense and offense.
"Wing chun is about balance" doesn't tell you much, does it.
Muay Thai is a ring sport, a particularly brutal and vicious one. Blows using fists, elbows, knees and feet are all legal and fully employed. Hand techniques are mostly derived from boxing. Signature techniques include powerful round kicks, vicious low-level "cut" kicks to the thighs and calves, and knee and elbow strikes to the head.
As one fellow said, "fighters start young and careers are short."
Wing Chun is a Chinese kung fu style which is geared heavily to hand techniques. Kicks are few and delivered at the low level. The hand techniques involve a lot of trapping, grabbing, and the signature "sticky hands" techniques. It's the first art studied by Bruce Lee.
It remains popular mostly because of it's association with Lee and also a currently popular series of Chinese films.....
