Has anyone here found an effective way to potty train 9 wk ols puppies? Specifically Italian Greyhounds, but any information in general would be helpful. I can take her outside and sit with her for and hour, and 5 mins after comming inside, she'll use the corner.... AARRGGHHH.
Update:IG's are notoriously hard to crate train, and she's cryed herself hoarse, and ruined her voice. She can't really bark anymore. We've tried it, but she will just go in her crate, and then we can't see her start the little 'dance'

the first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck.

It is going to be alot harder since you can't crate train. Watch her constantly. I would reccomend putting her on a 6 foot leash and tying it to your belt. Dogs go into specific positions before they eliminate. They either squat or hunch up. When you see it make a loud sudden noise, Clap your hands, yell, whack a pot, whatever. Get her attention. She will stop. When she does, pick her up and run outside to go potty. When she does, Praise her. Give her hotdog run around in circles etc. It is very important that you always watch her and do not give her the opportunity to pee in the house. Do not use pee pads or paper training as that encourages dogs to go in the house. Just a side note, dogs need exercise to eliminate so when you take her outside, play fetch for a little while and run around with him. Then put on the leash and stand still and use a word, mine is potty potty, that indicates that it is no longer time to play but time to eliminate. Do not punish your puppy for going in the wrong place. Puppies try their hardest to please and they may just hold it and develop bladder problems. Dogs eliminate after eating, sleeping, and exercising.
It is hard for puppies to hold their bladder for too long and they need to go for potty very often. Take your puppy outside every 1-2 hours. Some puppies take up to 6 months to be properly potty trained. Do feed your puppy in consistent schedule so that you could determine when its time to go to the toilet. You could also try to apply some pet urine remover to eliminate the urine odor on areas inside your house. But remember, never scold your puppy when an accident happened. Or else, she'll refrain from doing it whenever you're around next time.
shes young shell get it . are you crate training or did you get training pads? this make a difference i prefer crate training you leave them in the crate and take them out to potty ever 2 hours keep them out to play and eat for half an hour probably more in you case because you hay a very energetic breed of dog
Where they use the bathroom, put a potty pad for them. They might learn to use them. And after about a week of using the potty pad correctly, move the potty pad outside. Soon, they will learn to use the yard instead of your house. ;)
make sure she knows when she does it in the wrong place, tell her no and smack on the nose and give her praise when she goes out side treats good dog, and pet her
