I do not recommend an ametuer attempt to delete a trojan by the method MLM suggested, even tho, it MAY work. Reason: Many virii/trojans are polymorphic, which means they copy themselves in different names and different places. That makes them difficult/nearly impossible to remove, because you remove one, and one of the clones is right back in business. Also, since Windows XP/Vista have an automatic backup partition, that means a whole new set of trojans/virii are also created in the backup partition and those are also tough to get rid of.
For that reason, I normally recommend reformatting the hard drive and reloading the operating system to be sure you got rid of all the copies of the virus/trojan. Then next time you may consider reloading the operating system with a good, free open source OS that does not get virii, such as www.kubuntu.org
Firstly update and run your anti-virus product. You can also run a free online scan as well as some malware can actually corrupt or disable your resident security products. Here are a few online scans you can run:
(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after downloading and updating)
Third, after cleaning your system, disable System Restore, reboot and re-enable System Restore when you log back on. This will clear the malware that may still be lurking in System Restore, which could be reinstalled should you need to rollback at some point. Additionally, a reboot may be required to complete the malware removal process. For reasons this should be done after and not before malware removal, see the webpage below:
Lastly, you may also want to install the following tool. It is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)
If you cannot get it removed after the above, you may want to join a tech group that specializes in providing manual instructions on malware eradication.
