Help, any advice, my boyfriend lives in India and he wants me to go and visit him, trouble is I have never flown on my own before and am terrified as to the length of the journey and having to change planes as I live in Manchester, this is really frustrating as I want to go so badly but I think I will end up losing my nerve completely as I am hopeless when it comes to travel.

I would chose a good airline and ask the agent you are booking with to speak to the airline to advise them that you are a nervous flyer this will then mean that they will keep an eye on you and make sure that you are ok throughout the flight. Airlines are used to people travelling alone for the first time etc and are generally very helpful.
With regards to changing planes most airlines leave the bear minimum between connecting flights so ask for a longer time inbetween so that you have time to get through the airport without getting stressed or rushing. This can be done by breaking the flight down and does not cost anymore ( just in case you get an agent who dosent know what they are doing! )
Take something to keep you occupied as flying is boring, and try to get a night flight as most of your trip you will be asleep which will take up most of the time for you.
People are usually very friendly and I am sure you will be fine and just think of what you will get when you reach India!
Good luck and if you need any more advice please contact me.
It's really not that bad...
I am from Germany and before i moved to the US i came here alone to visit! Before that i never flew alone, i was just as worried as you are, but if i can do it, you can, too. The flight might be longer, but talking about getting lost at the airport or not understanding people, you can always ask for help and i am sure that everybody working on an airport can speak english...
So don't worry too much, go ahead and book a flight so you can meet your sweetheart. I'm sure he's worth it!!!
My sister is hopeless at traveling she manage to book flights from Toronto to Venice, navigated through changing flights and met up with her friend who is a world traveller coming from Japan. My sister doesn't speak a word of Itiallian and yet she and her friend had a great time.
GO FOR IT, take it one step at a time, check with you boy friend when he is off for holidays etc. Look for flights for those days. Book the flights, you most likely will have to change planes in the UK (lLondon) and possibly in India depending on where he lives. and have a good holiday.
