I apologize in advance for the long rambling question,I understand next to nothing about computers. Our internet went out Friday night,I think they messed up a line when they were doing construction, but it was fixed on Monday. The modem shows that it's working, but when I first tried to connect it said "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource(primary DNS server)" I tried doing different things I found on some online forums http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/w... then it changed and was saying "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource(DNS server) is not responding" I hooked up a different computer my Uncle gave me to try and see if the problem was just with the computer or the connection or whatever, and the internet didn't seem to be working on that one either. So I hooked the other one back up and then the computer was saying " "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration" And a box popped up saying "Network Error-Windows has detected an IP address conflict. Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue." I didn't do anything else, but the troubleshooting message went back to saying "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource(primary DNS server)" Wtf is going on?? The computer/internet/everything was working fine before it went out on Friday night, and my aunt who lives next door had her service come back just fine...

Each device like a modem or router or VOIP device connected into a Local Area Net Work will have unique LAN IP address. You can consider this similar to a unique telephone number assigned to each individual telephone. If two telephones have same number then telephone number clash will result. It is easy to solve this problem. Enable DHCP in your modem. ( DHCP is Dynamic Host configuration Protocol. Read more here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Host_Configur... ). Then the modem will allot LAN IP Address to each device, taking care to avoid LAN IP clash. You may also manually change the LAN IP address of each device. The default LAN IP is generally 192.168.1.1.
DNS is Domain Name Server, which are computers with look up tables. when a web site address is typed in the browser address bar, the DNS server will use its look up tables to convert the address into the form of 48.133.66.78. It is some thing like the use of a telephone directory to find out the telephone number from the name of a person. If you enable DHCP then that will take care of the DNS server. It is possible to assign manually also DNS numbers. for example one can use the Opendns website to get and use their DNS server address. This address also is in the form of 4 digits separated by periods. www.opendns.com
