I was working on my computer and suddenly the wallpaper changed to a nasty green warning and I kept getting little bubbles saying that I need to update my protection system blah blah when I don't even have one. When I restart windows tell me I have the Trojan Virus Spm and I have no idea what to do. Nothing else has happened so far but maybe I just can't see it. Please tell me what this virus does and how to get rid of it! Thank you.

A Trojan horse, or trojan for short, is a term used to describe malware that appears, to the user, to perform a desirable function but, in fact, facilitates unauthorized access to the user's computer system. The term comes from the Trojan Horse story in Greek mythology. Trojan horses are not self-replicating which distinguishes them from viruses and worms. Additionally, they require interaction with a hacker to fulfil their purpose. The hacker need not be the individual responsible for distributing the Trojan horse. It is possible for hackers to scan computers on a network using a port scanner in the hope of finding one with a Trojan horse installe.

You should try using MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less.
1. In Windows XP, go to Start > Run
2. Type MSCONFIG in the "Open:" box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.
3. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).
4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.
Remember, disable only those programs that you recognize and don't need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on.
5. Click on the OK button.
6. A message will pop up telling you that you must restart your computer before these changes will take effect. Click on "Yes" and your computer will automatically reboot.
7. That's it! Your computer should now boot faster and crash less.

it sounds Like a Vundo.
A trojan vundo is a nasty little bugger that does things like change your background or screensaver saying things like you have a virus or something. It's a nasty thing that tries to advertise and download fake antivirus on your computer.
yes. fake. it will say you have millions of viruses when you don't.
Google for Malwarebytes anti malware. that should help get it off.
or try vundofix. those are two good programs that helps get that off!
I had the nasty little thing once! IT also hides in internet explorer plugins so you may want to uninstall and reinstall internet explorer.
check wikipedia for further trojan.vundo information.
Trojan.vundo is also called MSjuan and virtumonde.
I hope this has helped you and i hope you get it off soon! I know what it's like and how frustrating it is to get a virus, and one like vundo! Take care! and i hope your days are happy ones!
Install anti virus, install anti spyware and install a firewall.
You dont need to pay that amount of money for a safer PC you can apply the above rules along with common sense (dont download suspicious files etc) can make the internet safer.
If your debating swapping systems go for linux (fedora, ubuntu, etc) these are FREE, safe and not as many virus' as windows. They are based on unix same as mac (which does also have virus' out for it, the above person should definitely get a antivirus.. don't think your immune)
I dont know what virus that is without seeing its name butit sounds as if it changes your background and tries to make you buy a anti virus? To be honest it could be doing anything and the best course of action is to back up your files and reinstall windows (or linux) with the three programs stated above. If thats not an option try install a anti virus and anti spyware and running them to see if they can remove it.

Use combofix from bleepingcomputer.com, then go download malwarebytes from softpedia.com or cnet.com and use it(rename the installer if it doesn't let you install it such as winlogon.exe), then clean the rest of the virus with superantispyware and Hitman Pro 3.5 from softpedia.com/cnet.com
