My friend and her family would like to go to Mumbai for a week, then to Shiradi for two days.
can you please suggest any decent hotel for 4 or 6 persons?
She has teenage children and they would like to buy modern but quality dresses, nice salwars, blazers and so on. can you please suggest where they can go and buy?
In Mumbai, what is not to miss to see? how many days does she need?
where can they have good food?
which area in mumbai is not safe?
how far is shiradi from Mumbai? what is the best mode of travel? by car? how much it would cost?
thanks.

Your Shiridi question has already been answered, so I'll help you with the other questions.
For hotels, I can't suggest any because I haven't stayed there, but I know you'll get good hotels for a reasonable price in Andheri West, Malad West and the Western section of South Mumbai.
For clothes, try avoiding the small shops. The shopkeepers don't really care about the quality of what they sell. They don't really have a reputation to keep up, because plenty of new people come to Mumbai everyday. Instead, go to the malls for shopping. There's Oberoi mall in Dindoshi, Orbit mall in Malad, R Mall in Ghatkopar and Mulund, Infiinty mall in Andheri and plenty of Westside stores scattered in Mumbai. Use wikimapia to find these malls.
Good food: Search for restaurants where the waiters are well dressed and polite and the restaurant is spacious and clean. I've been to many restaurants in Mumbai and have seen that the quality of food is directly proportional to the looks of the restaurant. Water given in every restaurant is safe.
The eastern side of Mumbai isn't safe. Avoid Trombay, Chembur, Wadala, Mankhurd and some parts of Vikhroli. These places are slum areas filled with people who throw stones at buses in broad daylight, just for the fun of it. Also avoid Dharavi and Kurla.
For travel in Mumbai, use the local BEST buses. The roads are very well connected, and you can travel all over Mumbai for just Rs.25 (a daily pass can be bought in the bus instead of a ticket, for Rs.25). The good thing about travelling by bus is that you won't get lost. You can always catch a bus and find your way back. The local people are very helpful with giving directions. Try avoiding the jam-packed local trains.
Places not to miss:
1. Marine Drive
2. Price of Wales Museum
3. Gateway of India
4. Elephanta Islands (take the boat ticket of a higher cost and you won't have any problems while returning)
5. Taraporewala aquarium
(all the above places are in south mumbai and you can see them all in two days)
6. National history museum, planetarium and Nehru science centre
(two days for the above)
7. Aksa beach (half day) (Aksa beach is beautiful. Juhu beach is filthy)
8. Rani Baug (also called Jijamata udyaan or Byculla zoo. This is a really beautiful place) (half day)
Places that you can miss, but are good for visiting:
9. Mani Bhavan (Obama had visited this place)
10. Hanging gardens and Kamala Nehru park.
11. Sanjay Gandhi national park
12. Bandra Bandstand (Shahrukh Khan's house is nearby)
Use wikimapia or google maps for finding these places. Printouts of the map will be handy, but you can also get around by asking people for directions.
Enjoy :)
