I was planning on going to Japan for my 21st birthday. Which is a few years away. I'm trying to learn Japanese, so I think I could handle a solo trip if I'm successful, but I'm still not too sure.
I don't want to be a typical tourist if I can help it, and I feel like if I'm not following itinerary I'll appreciate my trip more.
But I'm concerned if I get into a dilemma, I'd be alone.
I was planning on as long of a trip that I could get, something around 3 weeks or so.

if you feel comfortable I'd rather suggest to go alone. Japan is really safe. it means that there is no worry about wondering throughout japan.
thake a look at this link http://www.japway.com/living-in-japan/ and this one http://www.japway.com/japan-general-info/travel-ti... .
surely is cheaper and more exiting
Simple, are you a loner or a people person ? Depends on what you feel more comfortable doing. There can be advantages to both.
