Has anyone seen the new theory of time travel on the yahoo main page? It talks about the possibility of manipulating space-time so future generations could go back in time. The article seems to be leaning in a positive direction toward the idea of time travel. All I have to say is, if time travel is possible don't you think we would already have evidence about it? Wouldn't we see people from the future already? Wouldn't we already know how to do it? Basically I think it's impossible.

There are many theories regarding time travel and sure it is not something that you can say clearly a yes or no. For example it is said that if you build a time machine you will be able to move back in time only until it was constructed.... and other theories. What is sure according to quantum theory is that only some particles are able to travel in time under specific circumanstances. When I' m saying "time travel" don't imagine a travel among ages (from the modern age to the stone age). They can just teleport from one place to another without crossing the space in between thus moving faster than light. Anyway the energy needed for a human to travel in time is extreme, the gravity well needed probably would smash him before he was able to move throught it and as you said I don't believe that we'll ever be able to travel in time, not to mention the logical problems that will arise if time travel is possible (what would happen if you went into past to kill your mother before you were born, for example?).
I don't think it's possible. Here's my theory, picture timespace as a 3d grid much like this http://wwwvis.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/eng/rese...
now lets say all the lines moving up and down and the one moving left and right are space, the one moving back and forward are time and the whole thing represents the universe. Now lets pick any intersection and call it point a, that's where you are right now. With the earth rotating and orbiting the sun which is about a third away from the edge of a rotating galaxy, which itself is moving through space or the universe. You will never be at point a again in your life. even is you sat exactly still for exactly one year (use your imagination here) you would probably be in the same spot on earth and maybe the same spot relative to the sun, but the solar system would be in a different part of the galaxy and the galaxy would be in a different part of the universe.
It's quite possible that 1 billion years ago another galaxy was in this very spot and if you traveled back to that time you might end up inside a star or on another planet, or in the path of a comet or maybe just in empty space. Finally I think most people look more at the when, when they are talk about time as apposed to the where since the universe is always moving we would have to reverse the entire universe itself and that would take more energy than we have in the universe.
It'll never happen.
Ps. There's more to my theory, it's just hard for me to put it into words.
My theory is that if it is possible that there is no way you can actually go to the past with your physical body. If you were physically in the past you would alter the future. Now if religion in many cases talks about a "soul" maybe the soul can time travel. How many times do we hear of haunting or apparition of people who died a long time ago? Are those spirits time traveling? Maybe the case is that after we die and leave the physical body behind we can go to any point of time but are limited in interaction with the living. Most likely there may be a time travel rule that if your "soul" travels to a period before you died you can not interact at all with the living. I just don't believe in a time parallel that can be physically be visited or altered.
Well, I saw that article and it confused me to death. Anything's possible. They're even coming up with this invisibility cloak, but right now, it only works when the person's standing still. Where would your soul go when you time travel though? I would think a lot of religious people would ask that and that'd prevent them from ever time traveling even if it was possible in the present time.
Anyone who says Time travel is not possible forgets that to remember is to travel in time, only through the constraints of your mind...but that aside...
if someone were to time travel, the results could not be known to those of us in the current time stream. The alterations that are made just by being present would cause a change in the course of time and therefore not end up where we are today. Think of a flowchart of incredible complexity. Every possible action and reaction listed causes a change in the stream. Change any one of those and you end up in a different part of the flowchart. I could go on about this forever <snicker>.
Well anybody who've done advanced physics will tell you that a negative value of time cannot be reached using kinetic (space movement based) formulas. Negative time can only be found via combining in theory several formulas that are in fact incompatible. The only hypothesis that gives hope is the black holes hypothesis. But even there, physically, you can only see pictures from the past thanks to the reflected ray of lights lost in the perfect void of a black hole, you cannot interact with the components. Nevertheless, nobody can say how exactly it looks like from the inside, or how we can manage all this amount of light, so all this is pure theory.
Time travel is not possible. These people are all idiots. Time cannot be manipulated like that. All these physicists need to reread Einstein and Hawking. Time travel is not possible. The theories today about Space-time are incorrect and the future will prove me right.
I agree, that's a valid point. Stephen Hawking also voiced a similar objection to yours. See "A Brief History of Time".
