if you can't, I think the best thing to do is to buy an SLR and force yourself using the aperture priority mode. Understanding the other parameters will be easier...
finally, go to flickr, look at tons of photos... wonder how they were taken and why some of them look great when other look awful... eventually contact the author to ask for tips and techniques!!

take a class, either at TAFE, school, or a local arts centre.
and buy/borrow a decent camera. i use a nikon D80 i think.
