Always wondered if the teams travel expenses for away games--(the flight, hotel stay and eats) are paid in full by the team or if the league pitches in a bit.. So--- Anybody know the breakdown (if there is any) of how travel expenses are accounted for??
My guess-- each teams responsibility..

Teams pay for transportation (flights, ground transportation), lodging, a team meal (pregame meal). In addition, players are given per diem (the most recent figure I saw was US$83 per day; travel secretaries hand this out at the start of a road trip). There is a weighted allowance for partial days, and same day trips do not count (as an example, if NJD plays at NYR, the players would not receive per diem unless this has been changed).
Players are almost always paired up; some players choose to room alone; in this case, the club typically pays half with the player paying half (unless the player has a contract stating otherwise).
Most teams do not fly commercial; they either charter or have their own plane.
One interesting consideration for next year; with the paring of division games from 8 to 6, this will, for the Eastern Conference teams, probably cause a spike in travel expenses, especially for teams in the Northeast (NYR, NJD, NYI, PHL).
Team Owners pay for Flight, Room and Team meals. Outside of that, its the players expense. (for instance- having your OWN room you would have to pay for)
Illitch owns a plane that he uses for the Wings and Tigers. Some teams just charter a plane through a charter service.
Yeah, for the most part the teams have their own planes, but the Rangers and Knicks share one, I know. So once in a while they fly on commercial, The Knicks get it before the Rangers, I believe. (because you know, basketball is more important *sarcasm*)
teams have their own planes, but the hotel stay and the food is probablly coverd by the team
