Hi I have a Mac OS X, and love it. But I am having a problem right now that is driving me nuts. My computer won't let me install applications that I have downloaded. When I try to install a program, even the updates package from the Apple website, it tells me "There is no default application specified to open the document..." But its not a document, it is it's own app... why would I need to specify one app to run another? Please help, thank you!!

It appears the automatic application that unstuffs downloads is not working. i'd suggest running the disk utility program in your utilities folder and have it repair your permissions and verify your hard disk. If it finds a problem, follow the on screen directions. Also try the free utility software from www.micromat.com called techtool.
This problem has been occuring for a while now and im pretty sure Apple figured it out. Google your problem if you can't find anything just call Apple if i remember it is something to do with your updater that causes the problem.
