I slammed my big toe into a solid wood chair. I instantly felt extreme pain but just toughed it out. It's now about seven hours later and my toe still hurts, it's extremely swollen, and bruised in a few places. I'm pretty sure I broke it but I'm not sure. Also, what should I do if it is broken/fractured/etc?
Update:It's very difficult to walk. I've been using a cane to relieve some of the pressure.
And I can point my toe downwards, but pointing it up or bending it just doesn't happen

Everyone assumes their toe is broke after they smash it into something. The bones in the toes are quite tough. It hurts because you slammed it into a chair. If your arm hurt would you assume it was broke? For peace of mind you can go to the ER and they'll x-ray it. Some fractures only get wrapped and bad fractures need surgical correction.
can you bend it
ouch.
