Ubuntu partition No Root File System is Defined?

I am trying to partition my hard drive so that I half of my hard drive is using Ubuntu and the other half is blank and can be formatted with something else. When I go through the installation process for Ubuntu and create the separate partitions. One is formatted with ext4 and the other I specified as do not use this partition. It than gave me the error message: No Root File System is Defined so I set the mount point for the ext4 partition to /boot (not sure what that means). But it still gives me the same error message. What do I do so that I can set up 2 separate partitions one running Ubuntu and one blank so that I can format it to run Windows 7 and then choose which one to boot into? The computer is currently running only Ubuntu and can't be formatted without re-formating the entire drive. I already tried gparted or gpartition.
