I'm a FTM transgender and I'm having a really hard time picking what I want to change my name to. I asked my mum what male names she would've given me. All the names she said were Russian (Vladimir, Nikolai, Sergio) but I'm not Russian at all. I'm of British descent and proud of it. I want a name that reflects on where I come from, but it also has to sound nice. I want something elegant and beautiful, yet bold and strong.
The name I've been considering is Arthur, after King Arthur of Camelot. I've always been a huge fan of Arthurian lore and it fits all the things I'm looking for. It's British and it's the name of a warrior king--you can't get much stronger or more elegant than that. I've tried using it and I like how it feels to say it as my name, so I'm really considering going with it.
I wouldn't mind some suggestions, though, if anyone has any, but I'm more interested in knowing how my fellow transgenders chose their new name, whether you're FTM or MTF. How long did take you to see which one was the right one? Was it one your parents would've picked or did you pick it all by yourself? Why did you pick that one? The meaning or for some other reason? If you haven't chosen yet, how are you going about picking? I'm just curious.

Arthur's cool.
It's the name of a kid in my class. Sorry, off topic.
Anyway, I've always liked the name Alec, and I sometimes (before I knew I was FtM) though about guy names I liked. I usually got them from books, so that works. There was only one character I've ever heard of called Alec, but the problem was, my best friend also read the book, and it felt awkward thinking about her knowing.
I used websites like nameberry.com, because they had lists, so I could find similar names to the ones I liked. But then I realized I still wanted to be Alec.
Honestly, I think the 1st name that pops into your head is the one you really want.

I went through a baby name book, picked out several names, tried them out and picked the best out of all of them
Well, I'm male and not in any category of transgender, but my parents told me that had I been born a girl, my name wouldve been Elizabeth.
This is very weird. Not because of the name itself, i like it...But because I never asked them about it. they just told me one day at random. That has bugged me my entire life.
