Basically which is better for gaming, i don't normally play too demanding games, but i'd like to play BF3 on high settings. I use a 1366 x 768 resolution, and plan to use that for a while to come. I can see there isn't much of a price difference (0-30 dollars).
So which is better?
P.S. make is sort of specific, don't just answer that the 460 or 550 is better for none or one reason.

The 1gb GTX 460 is substantially better. The GTX 550 Ti is basically equivalent to the Radeon HD 5770/6770 (which costs about $99 after rebate, making it a better buy). On average the GTX 550 Ti is about 3-5% faster, but in some titles it's slower.
The 1gb GTX 460 is equivalent to the Radeon HD 6850, and is capable of playing tougher games on high settings at 1920x1080. At 1366x768 resolution, there's not much point to buying the higher-end cards because you wouldn't see any difference.
But usually the GTX 550 Ti just isn't a good deal for the money. Same story for the Radeon HD 6790. Both of those cards are priced too high. If you're gonna spend $130 for a GTX 550 Ti you may as well spend $140 for something better like a Radeon HD 6850 or 1gb GTX 460. If you feel the GTX 550 Ti is sufficient, save money with a Radeon HD 5770 or 6770 instead.

The GTX 550 Ti has one advantage- lower power consumption. The GTX 550 Ti only requires a 400W power supply with a single 6-pin connector. The GTX 460 requires a 500W power supply which provides dual connectors (just like the GTX 560 and Radeon HD 6870). So for some people, upgrading to a GTX 460 might require a new psu as well.
The 768mb GTX 460 has been discontinued for awhile. But even that requires dual power connectors.
Gtx 550 Ti Vs Gtx 460
The GTX 460 is better... depending on which GTX 460 you're talking about? The regular 1gb GTX 460 and the 768mb GTX 460 are indeed better than a GTX 550ti. At stock speed the 1gb GTX 460 is 15%-20% faster than a GTX 550ti. The GTX 460 is as easy as sin to overclock, you can simply raise the core clock to 725mhz stable without having to adjust any voltages.
There is a GTX 460 SE that had a short stint on the market. This card is a little bit slower than a GTX 550ti.
One strong selling point is the GTX 460 actually consumes less power than a GTX 550ti... this gives you more performance per watt. Also, the GTX 460 is one of the best overclocking cards you can find. If you wanted to you can hit GTX 560 and Radeon 6870 levels with some overclocking.
I only found 1 game that ran better on the 550Ti AMP then the stock GTX460 768mb, and that was a very small win. For the same price i think the GTX460 768mb is a better buy. If you get a pre-overclocked one or overclock it yourself performance would be even better.
