I give a thumbs down if the person has completely gotten an answer wrong. I answer a lot of questions in the homework help section and if someone used the wrong formula or explained something totally wrong I'll give them a thumbs down.
If I disagree with the person's views I'll read what they have to say just to see how they present their argument, but I won't rate their answer, because that's a personal view. I can disagree with someone and still be able to read and hear about their views as long as they can do the same with my views.
I will explain this rating system ( thumbs up thumbs down ) and how it works. Below a question being asked are other people who answer the same question.
One thumb for thumbs up this means you agree with an answer which is good. A green appearance will show message saying thanks for the rating.
The other thumbs is thumbs down when you give thumbs down this is because the person's answer is disagreed, so therefore they will be removed ( hidden ) with a message saying you gave a low rating to answer.
A well thought out answer, with a source if needed, gets a thumbs up regardless of whether or not I agree with the answer.
The opposite gets a thumbs down.
Example, from where I spend much time: "My 2004 Ford won't start, it turns over, but still won't start. Where do I start to fix it?"
Thumbs up. "You know the battery and starter are good. Check for spark, fuel, and compression. One or more of those components must be missing, or it would run."
Thumbs down. "It's a Ford, junk it and buy a Toyota."
I've found it helpful to include in my questions, "No thumbs down please, let's keep this fun." And I'll thank them in additional details when I see that people have really made the effort. So far, it's worked out well.
I can't really give them, but I probably wouldn't worry with it, anyway. Remember when actual questions could be marked with thumbs ups and thumbs downs? That was before the days of the "interesting" star.
GOOD OR BAD ANSWERS,To disagree is not really for this it is for chat rooms, blogs etc.THUMBS up or down has no bearing on the points anyway, and only a fool would be swayed by them in giving best answers.
I give them good answers because some has to. It is such a shame that people would give them bull crap answer instead of giving them the truth. Also, I personally give them the link to let them know that my facts are straight. Ciao friend.
Plus, I either agree or disagree but I usually give them what they need to hear instead of what they really want to hear. They can either take my advice or leave it but they still have to face the problem nevertheless.
It depends on the question—could be either. I've gotten thumbs down for asking a question as to what I had for dinner (a taco salad)—that made no sense to me though I could understand a thumbs up for an outstanding meal..

People think the thumbs down feature is there for answers they don't agree with, and it's not. It takes away from the whole thing.
I only give thumbs down to incorrect answers, or downright dangerous advice.
I'll thumbs up an answer that has gone above and beyond "the call of duty."

I only give thumbs down to an obnoxious answer.
I respect those who disagree intelligently.
