The HD 7970 delivers slightly better FPS than GTX 670.
But as one of answer-er said that Nvidia has excellent driver support. Off course that does not mean the driver support for ATI is poor just comparatively I found Nvidia's to be more prompt.
Now if the rig is purely based for gaming than HD 7970 though slightly costlier would be great but if do other stuff like heavy video editing, Photoshop etc the CUDA offered by Nvidia would help a lot.
Plus you get Physx. If you want to play games like Borderlands 2 with Physx [which is a must, if you know what I mean ;-) ] then you have get an Nvidia card.
CUDA and Physx are mainly the two reasons I prefer Nvidia over AMD/ATI.
Gigabyte sucks. They slap a nice cooler on a cheaply made card. I would look at MSI or EVGA first, Asus, Sapphire, and XFX are also strong contenders.
Both cards are pretty much equal in speed. You might get 3gb of VRAM with the 7970 but the GTX 670 is a bit more efficient and it overclock better. AMD is famous for releasing a great driver one month and then a horrible drive the month after. Nvidia is know for having more stable drivers.
I would get the GTX 670. I would either get the EVGA FTW or the MSI TwinFrozer model. I'd personally go with EVGA because they have the best customer support.
In terms of FPS they will be nearly identical, although the 670 is cheaper than the 7970 and the 7970 should be compared more towards the 680. That aside, the one thing that stands out about nVidia is there driver support.
Generally, I prefer whichever card performs the best, but nVidia is always very good at updating the drivers to their hardware, and often gain a performance boost(in the long run) from that.
if youin case you pick the 7870 and an i5 then i'm going to prefer Obama, would desire to you bypass alongside with the 7970 or the 670GTX and a Phenom i bypass to vote for Romney... Or, do i've got that backwards, hmm? i think you purely forced me as on your/my reasoning... An i5 3570 will on no account play 2nd mess around to any AMD processor for years yet to return... And as you will would desire to understand, specific there are a pair of ladies and adult males human beings on good right here protecting their meat and spanking furiously saying, "he reported Phenom 965, stroke stroke stroke"...
