i know about jacks.. they dont do well with cats , unless they are raised with them , there are exceptions to the rule, however they are exeptions. jacks can be very high spirited dogs , that need alot of room to run, or exercise to keep them calmer when at rest. can be territorial over toys, and bones, and will try to assert themselfs as leader of the pack. they will chase down, and kill small animals , and bring them home for throphy's including cats. not reccomended room mates because of thier hunting instinct. that being said , my own jack is a female, and is a great dog , does well at her relatives home with other dogs , as long as she is the only alpha female in the house.. she stays away from the cats there ..
A Beagle is a medium-sized dog breed and a member of the hound group, similar in appearance to a Foxhound but smaller with shorter legs, and with longer, softer ears. Beagles are scent hounds used primarily for tracking deer, bear, and other game. They are a loyal breed and most often very well tempered. Beagles love exercise and being around people. Beagle-type dogs have existed for over 5 centuries, but the breed as popularly known was developed in the United Kingdom about 150 years ago.
The Jack Russell Terrier is a type of small, principally white-bodied, terrier that has its origins in fox hunting. The name "Jack Russell" has been used to describe a wide array of small white terriers, but is now most commonly used to describe a working terrier.
A Jack Russell Terrier is not the same as a Parson Russell Terrier, which is a breed recently created by narrowing the Jack Russell standard. The Parson Russell Terrier is principly a show dog, and is rarely found in the hunt field.
The Jack Russell Terrier is also not the same thing as an Australian Jack Russell Terrier or Russell Terrier, which are dogs first brought into the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 2000 and the United Kennel Club in 2001, and which are maintained under a different breed standard and described as having been developed in Australia out of dogs originating in England.
The Yorkshire Terrier, (diminutive / nickname: Yorkie), is a breed of small dog in the toy category. The long-haired terrier is known for its playful demeanor and distinctive blue and tan coat. Yorkies can be very small, usually weighing between 5 and 7 pounds (2.5 to 3.5 kilograms).
I can suggest a good dog since you have a young child. I suggest a shih-tzu. They are very playful epending on a girl or a boy. Usually, males are more playful. I read in the newspaper that they are the best pets for families that have young kids.
Beagles are wonderful dogs, very sweet and cooperative. However, they are also quite sensitive, and can be frightened by a small child's high pitched voice ( they have super-sensitive hearing) and unstable movements. May I suggest that you contact a local Beagle Rescue group and inquire about adopting an older dog who is accustomed to little children and has been temperament tested with them?

matter-o-fact i do .. i work at a kennel and a show breeder owns it.. she has recently just bought a show beagle and he is wonderful.. he is so sweet and very loving .. he lives with a cat and 9 other dogs (three irish wolfhounds, five greyhounds, one mutt) so he gets along with a varity of dogs and is wonderful with children he knows when to play and when not to .. ithink that he is a great all around dogs.. yorkies usually arent as playful in my experiences but they are really really sweet and kids they can deffiently handle.. they are small and easyier to care for but im sorry i dont know that much about jack terriors.. hope that i did help though
All terriers are bred to fight something and because they have that instinct they need constant watching. Beagles are bred to chase rabbits and tend to take off on you but have sweet temperments otherwise. All dogs will get along with whoever is nice to them in their personality forming age of 8 weeks to 16 weeks
Beagles are great. Friendly, quiet, and don't need to to much exercise. DO NOT get a jack Russell. They are loud, need tons of exercise, and need to be crate trained...or else.

search around on the i-net for descriptions of each breed of dogs. good luck..
also I wouldn't suggest a jack russell. they are VERY hyper and might unintentionally hurt your four year old.
do not get jack russell!
good luck!
