It has to be worth his while to listen to you, which is only accomplished via reward for good behavior. Punishment usually isn't all that effective.

You might want to invest in a good book or video on dog training.

As to him running after your car, the dog should NEVER be unrestrained. That's really dangerous to the dog and unfair to your neighbors. Even in rural areas if he can get on someone else's property, he can damage their livestock. He can run into unfriendly wildlife or get hit by a car.

He needs to be secured, preferably in a kennel when you leave the house. That keeps him safe and from being destructive. A dog not used to a kennel will be mad at first, but dogs are den animals and usually grow to love them in a few days. You can use a kong filled with peanut butter to get him used to going into it willingly. I tell my dogs "go to bed" as the command to get into the kennel.

Then you can long lead train him to come when called. In a nutshell he needs a reward when he comes, and a yank forward when he doesn't. He can't be successfully offlead trained until he has mastered on lead. (a long lead is usually a rope of 20 feet or so).

I installed an invisible fence on our property. Basically the wire gets buried around the property and the dog wears a shock collar so if he gets too near the fence he gets zapped. I did that so mine wouldn't run off property if they get out. It took some looking to find one that wasn't $300, but I finally found one for $150 new.

BTW..a dog past 6 months should only eat once a day.

In any case, he's out of control because you guys never had control. Now is the time to be his "boss."

"go home" means nothing to a dog, because you are their home. He shouldn't be allowed to chase you. Does he dig his way out of the yard, or his he running free?

I use one word for calling dogs it is "come". If he runs, do NOT chase him. Since you have been using "come here" you need to change that command word all together. Use a one syllable word and it can be anything. The dog doesn't know the difference. After you have established what the word means with the dog, reward him with great praise when he comes to you. Ignore him if he doesn't come to you. Do not sit there and call him over and over again. That gives him the idea that he can wait as long as he wants to respond.

If you do not want him in the house and you do not have a fence that will contain him, make a kennel for him. One with a nice dog run on it, a shelter and plenty of food and water.

When you leave you can kennel him.

Dogs are expensive. It is not cheap to own one and treat it properly. I would work very hard to find a way to fit vet visits and obedience classes in to the budget. It is really what is best for the dog.

First, he shouldn't be in a position to chase your car. He should be safely confined behind a fence, or inside your house, preferably in a crate. If you crate train him, you will also be able to take him in the car in the crate, and won't have to worry so much about "clean up" if he does get sick.

Always use the same command, for come always say "come" or "come here." Don't change it. Also, say his name before you say the command, and get his attention that way.

First your dog should never be alloed loose if he does not come whn you call him, NO EXCEPTIONS.

He should be on a leash until you have control over him.

You need to be training effectively since he does not listen you are not training him he has your number and it sounds like he rules.

Get him on lead and teach him to sit and saty and down.

Work on come use treats if you have to but do not give one every time only sometimes.

It soulds lke you could use some training classes to get some help or a book check at the libary to see what they have that wouldbe free.

But you have some serious work to do.

Talk to your vet. Many vet offices have someone on their staff that can help with training and behavioral issues, and most will give advice for free. Also check out books about dog training at your local library. I would recommend training methods that use positive reinforcement. You already know treats work, so use that to your advantage. Give treats for good behavior on a random sporatic basis...sometimes just give praise. Making the treat always a possibility, but never a guarantee will help get them to do what they are told.

Well you could try calling Ceasar Millan or just buy him treats and show him that he needs to listen. Instead of taking the walks for right now you should try working on making him stay and listen. Just make sure you always leave his leash on so that when he runs you'll have a better chance of catching him and also he may feel a restriction with the leash (your control)

first off .. he dosent take you seriously. you need to let him know who is boss. and he thinks he can walk all over you and not have to listen unless you have a treat. my dog was trained by a professional and he taught us this technique where only one time you kindof scare the dog and force him to come to you. the trainer said the dog is like a little kid, and that when he is in trouble he will know its worse to run away than face the conciquences when you get mad. it is important that your dog listens to you whatever the situation whether he gets loose and will not come back, or is running around your house covered in mud. he needs to listen. use a firm tone in your voice. i also heard that dogs tend to respond to a males deeper voice better. when he does come to you reward him with alot of affection and praise but dont give him a treat.

If he does not listen, the first thing that I recommend is that he NOT be able to run around loose. He should be in the house or in a fenced in yard. Chasing cars is a dangerous thing, and he could get injured or worse!

Try one of those "shock collars", they are not in-humane, they actually work. My co-worker uses it on her daschund who seems to have a mind of his own, but if she were my mother I'd probably not listen either.... try Petsmart or something like that.

He should remain on a leash until he's trained and only given treats when he does the right thing.

Read more training books, it's not too late!

It may seem cruel, but put a shock collar on him. My dad had to do that w/ his dog. He has turned around quite well. You can turn the settings of the colar to low or to a high setting, even the highest will not injur the dog.

What ever you do, do not shock him when unless he is doing something wrong, cause if you do, then he will get confused, and not listen.
