The first poster had some really great suggestions, to add to that:
The Kohl's children mueseum in Skokie (short trip out of Chicago) if you have kids.
Depending on the time of year, Lincoln Park zoo is awesome, its free to get in, but there is a charge for parking if you drive there.
The ethnic neighborhoods are a cool aspect of chicago, maybe consider taking a tour realted to that
Sears Tower is best at night if you want to go up in it.
And most importantly, the food! There is a wide variety of ethnic food and all sorts of classic chicago stuff. Gotta have the Italian beef somewhere, vienna hot dog, and chicago style pizza. Some of my favorite restaurants in Chicago are: Leonas (local italian chain with a few restaurants around the city), Artopolis (Greek restaurant on Halsted and Jackson in Greektown, has some top of the line greek desserts), and Gold Coast Dogs (A local chain of fast food stuff with some great fries, the one I'm most familar with is in Union Station).
hey!! There are SOO many I'm from Chicago myself... born and raised!
i guess I'd ask how old you were to get a better idea of what you're into but i'll assume that since you're w/ family ud like to do things u can do with family!
Navy Pier is a must...Lake Michigan cool outlet stores...and the great huge chicago ferris wheel!
You have to try Chicago Pizza...theres many options but I recommend Uno's! ;)
A Lot of shopping to be done down Michigan avenue and State street as well!
There's milennium park/grant park! LOTS for tourists to see there!!
Many museums ( my favorites being - the field museum, the science and industry museum, the art museum, the ADLER planetarium, and of course the shedd acquarium!)
If you're into sports, there's wrigleyville! ...if your a cubs fan!! :) otherwise soldier field for football fans!
Many skyscrapers....and a lot of tours to take !! I'd take a tour..it'll show you the historic buildings in Chicago and allow you to get a feel of the magnificent city!!!!

the top of sears tower, a game at wrigley field and cellular field, a ride on the skyway, and the museum of science and industry are interesting.
