Need a little bit of advice, I know this is the South African section, but I figured its mostly South Africans who have been to Zimbabwe before.
I'm going to Victoria Falls in a few months and I wanted to go through Zimbabwe to get back to Johannesburg. My idea was to go from:
Livingston to Bulawayo (on a guided tour [purchased locally], stopping at the game reserves)
Bulawayo to Great Zimbabwe (local bus)
Great Zimbabwe to Messina, SA (local bus)
Messina to Johannesburg via train
I'ld probably there for about 5 days backpacking.
Is this safe for a white Canadian to do so?
It's going to be at the tail end of my South African travels so I want to make it was cheap as possible. How much cash ($USD) should I bring over?
Any precautions? Advice?
Thank you!!

How much research have you done? For example crossing the border at Livingstone and bus routes? I was in Harare one year ago and it was depressing. Stores with empty shelves.
The problem is that the whole country is in turmoil because of the economy breakdown. Lots of people are unemployed and have a rough living. This creates desperate people and you as a single white backpacker will be at risk.
If possible I would at least suggest that you find travel company. You will be safer as a group.
Also, the local currency must be exchanged on the black market as the official rate is a joke. This is an added risk.
If you go ahead, I would love to read a travel report and if you want, please mail it to me: [email protected]. I've been multiple times in Livingstone and Bulawayo but it was a few years ago.
Well never been but here is what foreign affairs has to say about Zimbabwe
