A very interesting theory and one that does play into much of what is investigated and researched by those involved in paranormal research. There is a very good book "The Case For Ghosts" by J. Allen Danelek and within one chapter called "The Mechanics Of A Haunting" this is explored and discussed. Why and how ghosts can and do happen is a mystery but the fact is they do, Too many people over a very long period of time have had these experiences and you simply cannot disregard their existence. It has been theorized that they exist in a dimensional space that is parallel to ours and can move in between these spaces .The intelligent haunting , which is probably the more compelling and curious , (if not more frightening) seems to be able to contact the living and interact more than the other types of haunting. As they have intelligence you would think that it may be possible to "Glean" information from them and I know individuals have tried and still do to try to find out more about their existence.
The "Residual" haunting is not as compelling as the intelligent haunting but none the less it happens and its occurrence is a phenomenal . It is more a replaying of an event or of an individual who once lived and it can happen over and over without any sort of interaction of or from the living.Like a recording playing in a loop, It just happens but where, how and why does this happen? It is very closely related to the intelligent haunting in that it is within a deminsion close to our own that can be seen and experienced by humans as well as animals.
This is indeed a mysterious place we live and I do believe , from experience, that ghosts and spirits are very real. I do feel that much is being explained by Quantum Mechanics and also feel that at some point we may discover reasonable explanations for how and why these hautings happen. I do not feel that ghosts are "Time Travelers" more than dimensional travelers but that is not to say that there is not an explanation for time travel within the explanation for hauntings. Im sure if you get to the bottom of one you may indeed fine the explanation for the other. They are loosely tied together.
As there has never been any hard, irrefutable proof that ghosts exist in the first place, any answer would be mere speculation.
I'd say that if they actually existed, all bets would be off anyway. Who knows if they'd have any meaningful connection to the normal world of matter & energy at all? They could very well exist in a state of being that is beyond our ability to measure or study scientifically; a state of being which may not even interact normally with the particles and forces of this universe.
And as for time travel - I'd say that it's probably impossible. And if it were possible, the energy required to do it would probably be beyond measure and it probably wouldn't have any practical applications.
Here's why: the Earth rotates about a thousand miles on hour and it revolves around the Sun faster than that. Our Solar system is spinning through the galaxy at unimaginable speeds as the galaxy itself plunges through the void at a similar, enormous pace.
If you were to time travel for just 1 second (forward or backward), you MIGHT end up somewhere in Pluto's orbit and die in the vacuum of space.
So, to be able time travel through Earth's history you would have to provide the enormous amount of energy to do it in the first place AND somehow simultaneously maintain your relative position in a constantly moving universe.
But as I said, if ghosts existed (and they probably don't), normal limitations may not even apply to them.
No one truly knows the nature of time, so that is one part of the question. But as to whether or not ghosts can travel back in time, it depends on just how you mean that. Ghosts seem to be able to experience the world in the time frame they wish to. However, given that a ghost is at least in theory, the individual who has died, to go back in time to warn oneself raises the problem of being in two places at the same time, and would thus seem to be precluded.
No, but you can do it now, as your spirit can astral travel to the past, present, or future.....just that it's hard to control where your spirit goes as it takes excursions on it's own.

If they had a time machine they could...:)
But then again they're ghosts...so maybe.
they could if they have the ability of hiro nakamura when they are still alive..
