Am I training my lovebird?

I am aware that pushing your hand towards a lovebird can help it to know that biting does not help getting my hand to go away. But I've got this blunt ( really blunt ) wooden stick, which I use it as a perch for my lovebird. But it reacts very violently with and appears to run away from it. Every time it is cornered by the stick, it uses its beak to lift the stick away and strikes it with so much force that at the other end of the stick,(obviously where my hand is) I can't help moving my hand due to the force applied by the end of the stick that my lovebird is biting. Is pushing the stick towards my lovebird useful, or does it just causes it to become more protective and bitty ? And my lovebird is also very attracted to the sound of plastic moving and tries to tear paper into shreds when he sees them. Why is he doing so?

P.S. I am using the word "it" because I do not know its gender.

Regards,

Herman.
