Wing chun (also known as ving tsun) came from a style founded about the 17th century by the abbess Ng Mui, one of the 5 Elders who survived the destruction of the Xiaolin temple.
She is said to have been the daughter of a Ming general and she was trained at the Xiaolin temple until the time she was forced into hiding by the imperial forces. Legend says she came upon a snake and a crane fighting, took from that lesson and added to her previous training to create a style which was passed on to her daughter Yim Wing Chun.
One version of the legend says that Wing Chun (the daughter) taught the style to her lover and it was he who named it after her.
