Unfortunately, the VCR and DVD mechanisms in these combo units are cheaply made and frequently fail.
Unless the TV/vcr/dvd is still under warranty, paying someone to try to fix it isn't cost effective. Much better to buy a used brand name VCR for $10 or so.
Sounds like a short in the VCR. I'd take a look in there and make sure there are no foreign objects. If you have small children, sometimes they like to stick coins in the slot, and that could be causing the short.
Are you making specific which you a million) have the television on the right channel to play DVDs or 2) which you're finding out on the perfect enter? My television has diverse possibilities for enter on the enter menu from the distant; i.e. Video a million, Video 2, Comp a million, Comp 2, etc.
ok, are you using the remote control to do anything?
if so, it could be interfering with the tv
it could also be an electrical malfunction, i recommend surge protectors for all audio and video equipment, you can buy them at the dollar store, and a $10 investment can save thousands
maby the tape is to old
try buying a new tv.
i don't know
