I'm having trouble deciding upon booking for a hotel through a travel site or going directly to a hotel's official website. Not sure where i could find better deals.
Also, do you recommend booking in advance (im traveling in mid-February) or waiting last minute for better deals.
If you recommend travel sites, which are the best and why? Thanks

What I usually do is check reviews and prices on TripAdvisor.com, and once I have a couple of prospects I then go to the websites of the hotels. Quite often the hotels will have a deal on that the third-party sites won't have access to. I find the reviews very helpful in weeding out the undesirable places.
Travel sites are better, usually have the better prices than the hotel's official website. This site http://voyagers-club.com/ for example is a very good romanian travel website though they have no offers for San Francisco. I also recommend booking in advance. The last minute offers are those who have not been sold.
Trouble with travel site for hotel booking is that sometimes the deal sounds nice, but then when you get to the destination you (sometimes) find that it is a lot farther to downtown than you thought, so you have to dish out for taxis or whatever. Directly to the hotel might be better, but it is a toss-up, really. (travel sites also have those discounts when there are "only 3 rooms left" or whatever...)
Travel websites are usually neutral about reviews and describing hotels so it's better refer to these website when you want to know about the quality and price comparison of your prospect accommodation.
