Ok... I live in Japan and let me tell you EVERYTHING IS ExPENSIVE!! Shopping, movies, food(depends on where you eat, if you eat at an Udon(type of noodle) shop than it will be around 1,000 yen or 10 US dollars) are normally expensive.... If I were you, I would bring at least 1500 USD... Also, look for what day the yen rate for exchange is higher then 115, You will get more for your money... Hope this helps, oh and PLEASE learn some key words like thank you(arigatougozaimasu) and hello(konnichiwa) before you come, those simple words will help you A LOT! Have a great trip to Japan!
I would not bring too much cash, you can use major credit cards almost anywhere, except some small shops and food places.
I would bring about $1000.00 uS, but you would be better off getting YEN at a bank here before you go.
I charged as much as I could and used cash only when I had to.
If you don't have a credit card, you might want to bring more.
The other thing you should look into is, if you will be travelling around the country, but a Japan rail 7 day pass HERE before you go, It gives you unlimited travel on Shinkansen and trains, not the subway though.Check this link for more info.

You can eat at some restaurants for as cheap as 400-500 yen. That is $4 or so. Take the trains and buses. Don't take taxis. A lot depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. Will you go drinking everynight?? Alcohol can cost as little as 300 yen per drink and can be very expensive. Want to travel outside Tokyo? The Shinkansen is expensive but the local JR train and buses are cheaper.
I do travel and book it myself. Generally I am able to come up with a deal that will mean food, accomodations and air and fun things for $200 a day per person.......to the caribbean mostly...but even NY ends up that - Florida too....
