I got a speeding ticket for $90 and 2 points a while back. I live in Howard County where the police are stuck up assholes (which is a little hypocritical because I want to join the police academy when I graduate college) and I'm going to court to try to get the points removed. This is my first ticket and first negative confrontation I've had with the cops.
Anyways, my sister says the cop won't show up for court and I don't know if I should still get a lawyer or not?
Update:Yeah I know it's minor, but I'm going to court to try to remove at least one of the points. I will be happy to pay the fine. My insurance is already through the roof without the points.
I'm just wondering if I should get a lawyer.

cop will show. speeding won't keep you off the force. in some states it's almost mandatory for probation officers and other officials to get caught speeding.
$90 and 2 points is pretty drastic! Are you sure it wasn't $90 OR 2 points?! For points, that seems like it would be for something more serious - something that would cause a more expensive fine. Anyway, the judge will most likely knock off the points as long as you pay the fine. Just tell him/her your story with some sense. Your sister is wrong about the cop. Courts usually schedule cases so that the cop will be in the building for several cases. That way he won't have to spend everyday in court.
The question should really be, were you speeding? It is just that simple. The courts are not run for profit, that is ridiculous, and I don't believe your contention about the local officers. Citations are issued to try tom make people change bad habits like speeding in the only way we really have to get the message across. A lawyer for a speeding citation is like using a shotgun to kill flies. You will have a chance to make your case to the judge and ask the officer questions, but if you really were speeding, save yourself the embarrassment and just pay the fine
Waste of time, the court is NOT interested in truth or justice, it's a run for profit business only interested in making money, the more you try and stand up for yourself , the more cash they'll try and extort.
EDIT for Starlord: Sorry yousse wrong. Unless the US courts are different to the UK (which I doubt) then they are businesses, If you can run a Dunn and Bradston credit search on something ; it's a business, in the UK the main business director of the courts is Lord Thockmonton and it's credit rating is 3 million pounds. On the door way they also advertise 'hours of business'. Pretty damning evidence of business activity. Not trying to be funny, just trying to educate.
