I know it sounds funny but where a fanny pack (the small bag around your waste). That way you'll have more hands free for shopping bags than worry about your purse...it's around your waste and very safe. Also many are large enough to put your camera in there too just in case you decide you want to take pictures. Make sure you stop and get some good food too! Go to a glass making factory, shop at the local stores not the Department store kind. Get chocolate the orange. Get a hand made puppet. Watch old ladies make lace by hand and pay for their items. It's amazing. Go to Konig Sea!
Not really shopping tips, because it is no different from buying in an american store. I will tell you that whatever you do, don't get a cab to downtown since you can catch the S-bahn right into the heart of the city. There is great shopping downtown around the Hauptbahnhof (Main train station), our favorites include Karstadt and Kaufhof.

Keep in mind the exchange rate of US $ to € to avoid unpleasant surprise when you get your credit card bill ;)

Do not worry. In Germany we do not have these silly habits that you Americans have for leaving tips for everything.
When you go into a shop you simply your purchases to the cashier take, once she put them through you just pay and you are not required to leave a tip.
