I've been playing Rummy for many years and it is a fun game. Just like many games strategy can mean winning or losing.
Although there are rules for Rummy as found in books such as 'the book of hoyle', many people play differently and with 'house rules'. So always establish the rules before starting a game with someone new.
Also its a good idea to sort your cards by suit and number and keep them organized, this way you will easily spot points already in your hand or possible points by whats available in the pile.
Remember to pay attention to the cards that are discarded. Not only because you may see a 'Rummy' but also because it may hold clues to the other persons hand.
Also remember if they discard a Queen, for instance, and you have a Queen in your hand don't discard it if possible. If any other player has a Queen, you would be giving them 30 points.
Remember if it looks like someone will go out, you want to start getting rid of your high point cards. (i.e. Ace, King, Queen Jack, Ten) This way you can try to avoid a negative score at the end.
If you have an Ace two three combo early on, you may wanna hold off and see if you can use the Ace in a higher point combo (i.e. Ace King Queen etc) but if it looks like the game will end soon, play those cards rather than lose the chance.
Always check the other players points aswell as the discard pile before discarding yourself. You may be able to play off of thier points, or at least prevent giving them an easy 'rummy on the board'
One quick way to really mess yourself up is to start putting down points of 3 like cards (i.e. King King King etc) these are legitimate points, but can cut yourself short if a straight comes available. And straights or sequenced (2, 3, & 4, of hearts etc) can mean you can build off of these points later. But remember this can work both ways, if you see one person setting out alot of straights you may be able to stop them from future points if you can lay down the 3like card set.
Try not to pick up a large discard pile if someone may be going out soon, as this could be devistating to your points, but if its early in the game it could be beneficial to pick up a large discard pile and build off the points.
A nice trick if your paying attention to the cards your apponents pick up, and for instance they grabbed a 4 of hearts from the top of the discard pile, and theres a 2 of hearts at the bottom of the large discard pile, throw the 3 of hearts out there and watch them grab up the whole pile. This could give you a chance to end the game and cause them a low or negative score.
There can be benefits to keeping your points in your hand (Gin style) to avoid the others playing off of your points, but its a dangerous strategy that requires expert timing to avoid getting caught with alot of points in your hand.
Hope these tips help.
Lots of luck!
