I have a 7 month old Pomeranian with a potty training problem.
I've had him for 4 months. He has complete control of his bladder.
When he was younger(about 4 months old) he went 4 weeks without going to the bathroom in the house, then he went one time, and he hasn't stopped sense.
He will go 3 days without having an accident, then have 2 accidents in the same day, the next day.
He KNOWS not to go inside, and I take him out every 2-3 hours.
He has a little dance that he does to tell me that he has to go to the bathroom. Once he starts the dance within 2 seconds, he's already in the middle of going.
I scoop him up, and take him outside, and only about 1/2 the time he will actually finish outside!
Any ideas why he is doing this?
Can you give me any tips?
Thanks!
Please don't just give your whole speech on potty training, because i already know how to do it!

Is he neutered?? If not -- do so ASAP.
Since you think he understands his job (I disagree but you know the speech) -- why not teach him a new way of telling you that he needs to go outside. Dancing behind you does not work if you're typing on the PC or listening to your iPod.
So -- Train a new signal -- have him ring a bell to go potty. It's a great clicker-training exercise -- see the attached link.

First that comes to mind: are you cleaning the spots with a pet stain and odor remover with enzymes in it? Those are meant to clean the pee out of the carpet so he can't smell it. My thought is, he passes by places he's peed before that weren't cleaned all the way (though look and smell clean, dogs noses are more sensitive than ours), and before he can finish his potty dance it's too late.
It could be a bladder infection, that is hurting him when he holds it in. Is the pee thick, possibly with crystals? For this, I would have him checked out by a vet. It's prone to little dogs, and growing up we had a dog that was fully potty trained that still peed on things in the house when it hurt.
If at all possible, let him run around the yard for a bit rather than going in and out at potty times. Let him run and get worked up, and he might find a little bit left in him (so he is completely empty when he comes back in) and watch his water consumption. If you give him a big bowl of water than take it away is just as good as him getting lots of little sips. Give him enough to stay hydrated, every few hours still, but this will help you keep better track. This way, he takes one big potty break rather than needing a lot of little small ones. Once you begin to trust him with his water again, give it back to him slowly.
Make sure you use something like Natures Miracle cleaner, it kills the piss stink, so your pup doesn't smell it and think your carpets his new toilet. My puppy does the same thing, 90% of the time he is fine, goes to the door and sits or tries to open the door. 10% of the time he is running around then all of the sudden, the flood gates open. Im thinking he thinks he can hold it then by the time he realizes he cant....too late!
