My son will be 3 in April and I have tried potty training him this weekend. He seems to be getting it and we have only had a few major accidents. The one thing that he is having a difficult time with is remembering he has to go. There have been several times I have asked him if he has to go, he replied no and then a few minutes later he has a small accident.
I have been putting him on the potty after naps, before bed and after snacks/meals. Should I be making him go more frequently to avoid these small accidents or let him try and figure it out on his own?

A month ago my son was doing the same thing, every time he had underwear on he would pee in them. He had gone pee and poop a couple of times on the potty but otherwise was reluctant, so I didn't push him because it was just stressful for both of us. The same week he turned 3 my mom got him a new potty. It was a fluke that he absolutely loved it. He wanted to use it the moment he got it and he did actually pee in it. He hasn't gone in his diaper since, including overnight and at daycare (with those little porcelain ones). He's even remembering to go without anyone telling him.
The main problem for us was his potty wasn't comfortable enough for him. We had both the Baby Bjorn one (awesome reviews online) and the Cars theme one (horrible reviews online) and he disliked both and they weren't comfortable for him. Got him the Summer brand one and that worked for him (even though it has many negative reviews).
He's still wearing diapers, not pull ups or anything, we just got him the huggies diapers that happen to also pull up for squirmy baby's.
Sounds like you're doing great. We're in the same situation at the moment. We taught our son to say 'Gotta go pee' when he needs to go, and then every time he says this and goes potty he gets a 'special jelly' (small jelly snakes are his favourite treat). If he forgets to say, then he doesnt get a jelly. This works as a great incentive for him to say he needs to go, although we still do have some accidents. Keep up the good work!
