No need to be a perfect swimmer as the navy teaches you what you need to do to survive in the water. I hope he knows how to tread water at least! There are women on most ships now but the real fun will come when he hits some of those great foreign ports. Plenty of time for college courses at sea or on shore. For being home for the holidays that will depend on where he is stationed, whether or not they are deployed and lots of other things. Some times he will be home & other times he won't be.

College it will again depend on the command. Even though he is a SK it doesn't mean he will have lots of free time. It will depend again where he is stationed; overseas, Carrier, Destroyer, or Submarine. Yes some ships you can do classes online or actually on the ship, but in some places (ie submarines) that isn't an option. It can also depend on how quickly he can do all his qualifications that are necessary for the job.

Women have been on ships for quite a few years. Submarines are one of the only places they aren't on. Then there is the church, malls, everywhere as well as the port he is stationed at who are on shore duty or other ships. But if he is just doing this to meet women then he has picked the wrong place. He may not have much time or he may. he may meet a great girl or he may meet one that just sleeps with Sailors. There is no telling what will happen when he is in the Navy. When the right woman comes along it could be when he is walking down the street, in a bookstore or in some foreign port.

Life is what you make it!! If you have a negative attitude and assume it will suck being a Navy wife, it will! However, there are a lot of great opportunities in the Navy that don't typically exist in the civilian world!! You may get a chance to live overseas (we lived in Italy for 2 years) and try new things, interact with different cultures. The possibilities are practically unlimited!! You cannot depend on your "dream list" putting you where you "want" to be -- but sometimes you have discover unexpected opportunities out of something that you had never even considered. Base Housing -- It depends completely on the base! There is just no way to generalize how long the wait might be or how easy it is to find housing off base within your BAH range. If you live on base, you will probably have a fairly comfortable town home or apartment-style. It will not be lavish, but your essential utilities (water, sewer, garbage, electricity, etc.) are included (you have to pay telephone, internet, cable, etc. since those are luxuries, although some bases also provide like "basic cable"). If you approach military life with a good attitude you will make many new friends who share the same challenges and issues that you do, but who are willing to lend a supporting hand (reciprocation is expected) when you really need it! You will find that life is different in the military (USN) but that you share bonds with people that the civilian world simply cannot appreciate! He will be take swimming test. They use to through us in as a right of passage when we passed the equator. Sometimes the ship will have parties and hold them at the beaches. We has one at Long Beach California. There are women on ships now,No there are probably men in the service that are gay but I never got approached, or knew if they were.I don't know what you mean if he is a storekeeper, will he have time for college. I was a Yomen, I worked in the Fisrt Lieutenants Office typing, was ship Barber, worked with the Doctor administering shots for the boys who was out on the town and got STD's, along with stitching up those that had cuts, amoung other stuff. I did work as ships storekeeper, but don't know what you mean as I said about time for college, the store is open certain hours, and there are others to help, thats why I had so many jobs usually they place you in one area, but if they are short on hand with men they use the ones most qualified for the job. Todays NAVY has gone through a lot of changes. As to if he will be home on the holidays, if he's low man on the totem pole as to speak, the others will have had their leave papers already submitted for certain time off, and he may not make it home. You aquire so many days off a month . After you have built up time you can put in a paper requesting like christmas off. If there is an opening he will get it. We couldn't have the whole navy's men all walk off the ship to go home for the holidays and leave the ship with no crew in case of attack now could we? I am sure he will have plenty of time for college when its time. He will have Christmas dinner, Thanksgiving dinners when he doesn't make it home with the men. The Navy has excellent cooks compared to the other branches of the service. He will meet plenty of nice women when he goes on leave. We had men that married Hawiian girls that were beautiful, Korean girls and women from California to Maine. Your biggest worries is that we should pary for peace, bring our troops home, and that God keep America in the protection of his arms along with the others in this world. there are SO many stereotypes that you have listed it isn't funny.

1:. he will be required to pass a basic swim test in Boot Camp. Swim calls( At sea) are voluntary.. if he doesn't want to jump into the ocean to have a few free minutes of fun, he doesn't have to. there are spotters(for sharks and other assorted critters) as well as rescue boats in the water.

2. the LAST thing he needs to be doing is trolling for a good piece of tail. the ones that he would want to bring home ot mama are out there, but he doesn't need to be trolling for one. these are people he will be WORKING with, and therefore he owes them respect.

3. Most ships are Co -ed. some smaller frigates and the Submarines are not. I am not even going to comment on the gay crap.

4. He will be allowed to pursue a college education AFTER all his training is completed and he has become Qual'd. some commanda\s may also make him wait until he has his ESWS pin before they let him start college courses.

5. Leave is entirely dependent on where he is, what he is doing and whether or not he has leave built up. If he is in Boot Camp: NO. during A school, he may be allowed to come home for a week, but it will out of pocket and he will use up leave. After he hits the Fleet: only if the CO says he can.

It depends on his job... Just going off of what I hear from friends and what not but if you're on a ship there's a very high chance of females there... of course the ratio is going to be waaaay off the chart with men outnumbering the women by like 100 or so.

Deployed military is never home for the holidays... don't count on it.

Oh and last I hear, during basic training for Navy you have to fall and swim in a pool.

Maybe its changed since I have been in 7 years ago, but the Navy does not make you swim in the Ocean, unless you decide to be a SEAL or a Diver, they make you swim 25 yards in a pool, and float for 5 mins. He would find a female in plenty of places, Church, a Club, through chance, friends etc. He could have time for college, if he makes it go right, but thats something he will have to make work for himself, the Navy isnt going to do it for him. Home for the Holidays, depending on wether he is at sea or not, most of the time if he is at his homeport, he should be able to go home for the holidays.

Lynn, you really need to let your brother grow up or go with him to talk to his recruiter. You really don't know what you are talking about and I guess that is why you are asking questions. The Navy has thousands upon thousands of Navy females on ships. 20% of my last carrier was female and that number grew even more when the airwings came aboard. There and tons of Navy females doing all the same jobs that males can do. Stop stereotyping in your thinking that the military, especially the Navy is for men only. We also are not all gay in the military. Another civilian thought process that the military men don't like. Your brother will swim in boot camp. He will have to jump off a 25 m platform into a swimming pool, tread water for up to 30 minutes and then swim with about 100 other people in the pool with him, males AND females. If he can't swim he could be held back in training until he learns how. If he can be taught during his time there he will have extra swim time where he will go to the pool during all non-training times to be taught to swim. Not a good place to be, he needs to learn before he goes to save himself and everyone else a lot of time. He will have time for college eventually, but his first priority is the Navy and getting ALL of his qualifications completed first. That is up to him, he will have lots of deadlines to get this done when he gets to the ship, but the Navy will not pay for him to take classes until he has all their required qualifications taken care of. He will not really have time for traditional college. He can take online college classes and shipboard, college instructor taught classes while they are underway. He MAY have time for a real class here and there at a local community college, but again his Navy job comes first and if he gets underway or has duty on a school day he will have to make arrangements and if they approve of the time away the college has the right to say yes or no to missing classes. Chances of him being home for the holidays this year are slim. If he is boot camp during Christmas he will stay there. If he is in "A" school it is up to the school to allow him to come home, no guarantees. Please try to get some time to go talk to his recruiter or just let your brother grow up and go do his job with the Navy. The Navy is not a bad place, with bad people out to get the new guys. He has made a very smart choice, but you need to realize he will be gone for the next 4+ years and you won't be seeing him much. Same thing if he went away for college. People do grow up and move on with their lives. Please stop the bad talk towards the Navy, we really do get tired of hearing all the males and females are gay.
