This is call beak trimming! and done only within a egg producing farms and factory's.This removes part of the beak from chickens mostly the top part. This is a measure to stop excessive pecking and cannibalism and feather pulling in stressed out and over crowed birds.
If this is not gone the birds will peck until other birds are sore and bleeding leading to loss of hens. This is also to not being able to feed right. High density confinement and low confinements. No amputations are 100% successful. There are several methods used, block trimming at 6-8 days old, side type trimming at 6-8 days old, high speed trimming at1 day old, notch type trimming at1 day old, beaking trimming at 6-12 weeks old, and 18 weeks trimmings.
The skills to do this is touchy! In my opion this is un called for and CRUEL!!!!!
De beaking prevents the bird from foraging, eating at all so the bird produces for nothing (so owners dont have to feed),establishing a pecking order, preening, causes PERMANT PAIN,and they look deformed.POOR BIRDS
Rough handling of the birds is going on all over.yelling grabbing and tossing away after done. There poor little faces shoved into a manchine and half of all there beaks shaved, toren.or cut off with PAIN.This ALL NEEDS TO STOP!!These birds are HURT by this and the way its done along with the handleing of people. Methords are hot blades, cold blades, soldering irons, jacknives, pruning shears, dog nail clippers, liquid nitrogens, hot plate cutting bars, use other chemicals to disslove!

Oh, yes, I read this in a vegan brochure. They cut off the beaks so that the chickens will not peck each other...because they might kill each other, and I guess they think that's like wasting chicken. Good question!
even as i trust various animal rights activists are followers or extremists, I do trust that is plausible to rearrange a valid protest. human beings can continuously tell once you're coming from the right position, and it incorporates a stress.
Keeps them from hurting one another as chickens that are cooped up will fight with each other in such close quarters. Sad to see. :( They also shove things down their throats to force feed them. Thats why I dont eat meat. :)

Keeps them from pecking at each other. Anyone who kept chickens for food knows that.

So they can't peck each other. The debreaking is cruel. Birds don't peck each other to death if they have enough room.
