I've been homeschooled my entire life, but in the fall I'm going to high school for 10th grade and I'm soo excited. But freaking scared.
I just have a few questions......
1. How much homework do you get a night? (I'm taking geometry, US History, English, Spanish, health and environmental science, none of them AP)
2. Is school REALLY as bad as everyone makes it seem?
3. Do you have any free time or are you just doing homework and studying all day after school?
4. I'm really nervous and scared because the high school is HUGE so what should I know about going to high school! Besides like "be yourself, don't do drugs, etc" I'm not going to get into any of that. Please tell me everything but don't scare me or anything but be honest!!

The amount of homework truly depends on the teacher. At the start of school, you won't have too much, as its for introductions and "getting to know you".
DON'T WORRY. The more you freak out the more likely you will have a panic attack your first day.
(if you haven't done this already) ask your parents if you can take a tour of the campus while its in session. that way you can get a feel for passing periods and the amount of people.
TALK TO PEOPLE. I know this piece of advice may seem sucky, especially being the new kid and if you are shy. But that is truly the only way to get the nerves completely out. Be it in the hall just saying hey, or randomly sitting with people.
Your experience is only as good as you make it. People often complain, but don't do anything about it.
Get involved. Join clubs, go to the sporting events, dances, pep rallies, join the band, theater, choir. whatever floats your boat. By participating in something, you will have more opportunities to make some amazing memories. DON'T TRY AND DO EVERYTHING THEY OFFER IN ONE YEAR!
Be realistic in your expectations. Do not go in expecting the best nor the worst. Your teachers will be a wide variety of personalities. Some will be strict, chill, funny, and maybe even a combo of all of the above. No matter how your teachers are, do your best and try. They will automatically seem better if you put in the effort.
Don't be afraid to ask questions- be it you are lost or don't understand something in class.
The first few weeks you start will be hectic without a doubt. They will be filled with an enormous amount of paperwork, you signing things, the same questions from your teachers and students, and "busywork" kind of stuff. I can promise it does get better.
The only advice I would have is:
1. Take AP classes, they're totally worth it
2. Get started studying early in the summer, so you'll have a firm footing when you start school. Use Khan Academy or something like that.
3. It depends on the school, but I have had very little free time during my high school career.
4. I love school, I love learning, and if you allow yourself to love these two things, or at least tolerate them, your high school experience will be very enjoyable.
5. Be involved with your school's community. Join clubs.
6. ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR TEACHERS. SHOW THEM YOU CARE. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Even if you don't care about the subject, giving the teacher the illusion that you do will help you. You don't necessarily have to do this in class if you don't want to act like a "teacher's pet" in front of other kids - just a few questions after class will do. Also, if you are sick and miss a class, email your teachers for the assignments you miss. They love that.
For 1 and 3.you shouldn't
get that much homework if you don't any AP class so you should have plenty of free time after school unless there's a test coming up then you might wanna study and no high school isn't as scary as some people make it out to be it can even be fun sometimes
1.You'll probably get 3 hours of homework a night, 5 at most. To be honest, i always try to start on my hw during class so that by the time i go home i only have an hr of hw to do.
2. School is not bad at alll. do the best you can to make many friends, of every nationality..ect. the more you interact with others, the more fun you will have, trust me!
i'm about to graduate from highschool right now, and all these years iv always kept myself a little too closed towards others. yes, i would talk to everyone..ect. but when it came down to hanging out during breaktime, i would just hang =out with my one bestfriend, which i regret. keep yourself open to everyone, and dont be afraid to act a little weird sometimes.
3. i, personally, have a lott of free time, but im such a big procrastinator that i waste all of it.
actually, i depends on what school you go to. if your going to a magnet/private school, you're less likley to have alot of free time.
4. like i said before, make alot of friends. by joining a club, it will be a good start for you. it will help you find people that have the same interests as you.
i'd really recommend you participate in as many school activities as possible. i didnt and i regret it. not only will it make you feel like your highschool years was well-spent, but it's good for colleges when they see that you've done extra cricular activities.
Really when you go to highschool, make sure to spend everyday like its the last because it will pass by really fast, and highschool is basically representing the last years you have of being a kid without any responsibilities.
i dont know what school you're gunna go but if your school has ASB then you should join it. they assemble all the school activities and just have the chance to do extra fun things that regular students dont do.
i really wish you good luck!!
I wish you the best of luck.
