I am a woman player. I play both co-ed and women's. I have had only two sexist comments made to me since I started playing. Most guys these days know us girls can play. We tend to work just as hard if not harder then the guys we play with. They see that. They also see that the game means a lot to us and that we love playing When I am out there I am just another player. The guys respect that. Most , if they have a mind , think it is cool
It isn't weird, it is more so uncommon. I am a girl and I play hockey. Some people give me a ton of crap for playing hockey but also a lot of people think it's really cool that I play. I think some people find it more unusual because hockey is such a physically demanding and rough game. A lot of girls don't really consider hockey until they are 10 years old+ and they give up because it is a hard sport to master. I love hockey and I think it's better than any other sport (I've played baseball, basketball, soccer, and a little lacrosse all when I was younger)
I think, just as in any sport, women are more than capable of playing hockey. Just look at Cammi Granato, sister of former NHL player Tony Granato. She is by far one of and if not, the best womens' hockey players in the professional world. Haley Wickenheiser, daughter of the late St. Louis Blue Doug Wickenheiser is another great example. She played for a few men's professional teams in Europe recently and I believe she has also scored a few times. And of course, Manon Rheaume, sister of NHLer Pascal Rheaume. She made hockey history by becoming the first women to sign a professional contract in 1992 and then made NHL history by becoming the FIRST EVER woman to play in and NHL game (she was a goaltender for the Tampa Bay Lightning in their debut season of 1992-93, although Wendell Young, J.C. Bergeron, and Pat Jablonski took the goaltending duties in the regular season).
I don't like the ones that act to much like guys and are really trying to prove a point rather than just having fun. I have seen some good looking ones though. I have fun playing with girls in hockey and they are all very good. The thing is though you usually can't have checking when they are playing and I like to hit people.. RWARGHHH. ( when im not a goalie :) )
But yea i knew a girl who played she was actually really cute =)
gave me hugs when i would have a shutout or did well being goalie.
Two of my best friends in hockey are women who play the game well and with respect. One of them you already know - her name is Kimmy from yahoo answers. The other is Kim St Pierre from the Canadian National / Olympic team.
Admittingly though, there are also women who play hockey who look and act very masculine both on and off the ice, and it is those that many men have issues with.
I think that frequently they have to out-play the boys to prove their worth. When I played, I used that idea as a driving force to make myself a better player. It worked for me.
On co-ed teams, we've made some progress in gaining respect.
It's a 'loaded' question, but I think that if they have skills, then it's not much different than a male player given even circumstances.

Cammi Granato is probably the best US female player ever. Do some research on her and you will be impressed.
I think they're bad asses. I wish my wife played!
