As long as you are going for under 30 days, all you need is your valid passport and 15 U.S. dollars upon arrival to purchase a touristic Egyptian visa at the airport. Once purchased, you will have your passport checked and the man (or woman) will place the Visa (its not a stamp one, its like a sticker) onto a visa page on your passport. This visa is valid for 30 days. Overstaying the visa without renewal will result in fees.
If you are going for longer than 30 days then you still can buy the tourist visa at the airport but have to go to the Mogamma building in Tahrir Square and get it extended for up to 6 months. Takes a few hours but its worth it.

You may not like Cairo much when you fist arrive here coz you will see lot of noise, crowd, traffic, street vendors and markets bustling with activity. This is purely due to the recent growth of the city. But Cairo has some interesting attractions.
