We live in the country and have a gravel driveway. The edge of the driveway/edge of the lawn is all over the place. I want to rent an edger and give it a nice clean edge. i think it'll look MUCH nicer. Any tips? Am I thinking straight?

I did a landscape job and had a couple of guys come out and pour curbing. There are different shapes and colors of concrete curbing and it is very durable, they charged $215 for 100', that was their minimum charge. I found them on craigslist.org. they had the job completed in about an hour and it looks very good.
I would use a shovel and install metal edging along the edge. You are going to hit rocks and dull or break the blade of the edger.
By putting in the metal edging you can use a weedeater on the lawn side and roundup on the driveway side. Vinegar (full strength)also works for killing grass and weeds
Unique and cheap... hmmm... well, unique might be making your own decorative blocks out of something shaped the way you like, like a loaf pan, or an unusual tin... make the blocks out of Sakrete, an inexpensive ready-mix concrete product. This would be pretty cheap, and the shape would make it stand out from simply using bricks or Belgian block. Cheap is easy. Home improvement stores usually have several plastic edge choices that you just hammer into place, or fasten down with stakes. Unique is the hard part.
You can do it that way, then afterwards you could get plastic edge stripping put down to stop the grass growing back, this depends on the lengh and if you stay on the drive when driving
