A bunch of friends and me want to go for an end of exams, summer, "good-bye" trip before we all go off to uni. We are all pretty broke and are saving for uni, so there is no large budget. I've been looking on train and airline websites, but a lot of them cant be booked until much closer to the time, and I need to know when I need to start some serious saving and begging to relatives. Has anyone ever done this, or have any idea about what the cheapest method of travel is?? we need to get from the birmingham/bristol area to amsterdam. We dont mind sleeping in trains etc, it just has to be cheap. Thanks

Check the prices for about the same time from now as you will book, in most cases you will find many cheap options 3 months ahead.
I have flown Bristol airport to Schiphol with EasyJet, and when not bringing a suitcase to check in it is often the cheapest option. Add your bus/coach and if needed train in the UK, and about 4 pound in the Netherlands for the transport.
If you look on the hostel booking sites now, you can get a good feel for the prices. Again, check a few weeks or months ahead. Just google Amsterdam and hostel to find many. You can also try apartments or houseboats, for staying with more than 4 together. Do use the reviews or just enter the details and review before you book.
The other cheap option is coach to London and from there to Amsterdam, mostly just a little cheaper than flying when booked near the date, but more expensive than EasyJet bought on the day the tickets come available.
Lastly, more fun but less cheap, by train or coach to London and from there by rail and ferry to Amsterdam. Count on needing an overnight train or ferry, as for the day ferry you will need a very early train from London Liverpool street. Berths aboard the ferry are not expensive, again, when booking 3 months ahead.
Five to a car and traveling via Dover Calais can be cost effective, but remember that parking in Amsterdam is never free and can be really difficult to find and rather expensive.
How much you actually need depends on what you want to do. If you do not include drinking and visits to 'touristy' locations in the RLD, you should get by on 50 pound per person per day.
Add the same for drinking as you would at home, and as much as you can scrape by for sightseeing and enjoying what is available (if sometimes still illegal) in Amsterdam.
" the dutch flyer " london or any east anglia rail station to amsterdam but it is single only and a daytime crossing on the ferry ( harwich - hook of holland )so it is much less expensive . and flights from birmingham with easyjet . probably the least expensive will be coach see national express . EDIT - Hostel needed for acomodation
I have searched something for you on Dutch websites. They say that the other way around, from Amsterdam to Birmingham, its best to go with these (www.BMIbaby.com and www.hlx.com ) compagnies, and take a cheap bus to Birmingham. In your way it would be the other way around of course.
I hope this helped you, and have fun in Amsterdam.
