Codons are made through a process called transcription which is when DNA is made into mRNA. mRNA contains the code for each amino acid. Each codon is a series of 3 letters which code for one amino acid. so basically DNA is made into mRNA. mRNA contains the codons which code for an amino acid. after the code has been read, all of the amino acids are made into a protein.
A gene is a section of DNA responsible for a particular physical trait in an organism. Traits include things such as hair color and resistance to antibiotics. DNA is composed of 4 molecules called nucleotides. They are linked together in a specific pattern like 4 colored beads on a string. A sequence of three nucleotides is used as a code for one of twenty amino acids. The amino acids are linked according to the sequence of these "codons" in genes. Amino acids are then linked together into special molecules called enzymes.
The DNA itself is composed of a pair of strands of linked nucleotides. Nucleotides exist in matched pairs. Each nucleotide in a single strand is cross linked to it's nucleotide pair in the opposite strand. This makes DNA like a photograph and it's photographic negative. The two strands of DNA separate, and two new strands are manufactured by special enzymes. This results in a pair of DNA double strands (think of cloning a ladder into two identical ladders). The genes are copied along with the DNA as well.
What is interesting is the enzyme which accomplishes the construction of DNA is constructed itself from the DNA it builds.

Elegant, no?
codons are three nucleotides that make a protien, for example AUG is a codon
