I've played Wow, LOTRO and AoC and to be honest the game i like the best is LOTRO. If you find the right guys in the game, I swear to god you'll have so much fun. I found the right people in that game, and damn that was fun. I stopped playing it around 1 and a half year ago because of some pvp problems.
The PvE is fantastic, going into an instance could result in a heck of a lot of fun. It's better than WoW and AoC in my opinion there.
The PvP has been a bit unbalanced, but you can play as a lvl 60 monster player all ready at lvl ten which makes the game a lot more fun in the beginning. And you'll learn a lot more. It's not the greatest PvP but it's fun.
Why choose LOTRO?
Well because it's got a lot of really down to earth people, who is nice.
I'm not saying that you can't have a nice time in one of the other games, but I'm saying that LOTRO is a great game.

But if you're looking for a pvp based game I advice you to buy AoC because it's just simply better at it than Lotro.
For gods sake don't buy WoW the game is just lame ^^
I've seriously during a span of 1 year never found 1 person ever to be really nice. The game is just lame if you don't have any other friends in the game.
And don't at all buy everquest that's the biggest mistake in your life!
You've also got WAR but you'll just get sick of it after 10 days as I got after my free trial. Guild wars is horrible took me about 4 hours to reach lvl 20 then I didn't know what to do. And a guy told me "You gotta get better armour" so fun!!!
All I can speak for is the original Everquest and WoW. Now I have heard that EQ2 isn't that great. For WoW I do respect Blizzard (the company who makes it) and what their vision for the game is. My cousin has told me about LOTRO and he said it was pretty good. If I had a choice I would still choose WoW, even though it gets old from time to time. Now have you considered Guildwars? It has no monthly subscription fee and is a pretty good MMO. I personally play both to change it up a little, and it is cheaper than trying to pay two monthly fee's.

I've played all of them - EQ2 is the best game but WoW has more players and it's more fun because of it. Go with WoW.
