To observe the night sky you really need to get to a totally dark location far from any city lights or street lights. Allow your eyes at least 15-20 minutes to adapt to the darkness, and preserve your night vision by using a red filter over your flashlight. If you do this you'll see WAY more stars -- you'll be amazed.
