At 2:00 Branden rented a mountain bike from The Slick Rock Cyclery. He returned the bike at 5:00, after cycling 18 mi. Branden paid $12 for the rental.
a) Find Brenden’s average speed, in miles per hour.
b) Find the rental rate, in dollars per hour.
c) Find the rental rate, in dollars per mile.
Solve using the elimination method
1/3x + 1/5y= 7
1/6x – 2/5y= -4

What they are doing is telling you to enable p = a million/x and q = a million/y to make the equipment much less puzzling to clean up. So if p = a million/x then 3/x + 4/y = 5/2 turns into 3p +4/y = 5/2, then if q = a million/y then it turns into 3p + 4q = 5/2. try this with the different equation, clean up for p and q, then you definately can decide what x and y are.
