Easy and fun, yes. But not totally cheap. But there there are tons of interesting things to see and do. I wish I could take such a journey for a year in Germany myself. Enjoy. (PS: take a look at couchsurfing.com)
Absolutely it is fun and easy. However if you plan to do this for a whole year bring plenty of money. Also, if you are not a EU citizen a tourist visa will only allow you to stay 90 days max.
Yes to everything, and if you have the time and money, stay where you like the people and landscape most. I won't advise you on German train tickets now,. but the German railway network is a good idea to travel on if you're on vacation; for a longer stay, you might want to have a car.

Yes to both questions. Germany is a fantastic country with so much to see and do. The people are also very welcoming and friendly.
Get yourself a European Railcard and explore some other countries too, it's cheap and you will learn so much and meet so many interesting people.
Schoene reise!
