I'd recommend speaking to a travel agent. If you're not a seasoned traveler or are a young person traveling alone then it's safest to choose a package tour. I'm Australian and it's my opinion that there are very few tourist spots worth your time and money. However there are a few tourist spots worth a lot of your time and money if you've got it. My recommendations are:
Sydney - the north shore beach suburbs are best. Avoid crappy western suburbs.
Byron Bay - you'll leave it hoping for a lotto win so you can buy a house and return to live there forever.
Cairns - I've never been there but travellers love it.
Melbourne - People love the place but its weather is all over the place, like 4 seasons in a day.
There are many great cities. A harbour cruise in Sydney is amazing. Melbourne gets a little hot. Darwin is a nice small town. It is really hot there and you can't swim although it is quite scenic and the place is lush.
Other places: Brisbane, Canberra, towns along the coast near the great barrier reef.
The great barrier reef is a must see! Take a catamaran out there and go snorkeling. I recommend you look at cruises. Aussie coast cruises are very fun.
Here is a site that may get you started. Fun places to travel in each state, info on dangerous animals etc, and practical info about activities, where to stay, how to get around, where to get cheap filght tickets... even Aussie jokes:)
Have you heard of contiki, they do tours; i did one in the US and have an awesome time, im sure it will be the same here.
